It's a good thing to do!

I just downloaded the first beta version of Fences, and do I ever like it! I am not one who usually keeps icons on the desktop (due to ObjectDock), however I do occasionally put things on my desktop temporarily. For those temporary icons I put there, fences is a wonderful invention! Thanks Jeff!

The only glitch I have found so far is that I am not able to right-click and drag out a new Fence while the RightClick program is running. When I right-click to drag out a new fence, my RightClick menu pops up. I had to unload RightClick, and then Fences worked like a charm.

It would be nice if the two could harmonize. Either way, I see this application becoming one of the greats from Stardock!

My favorite beta quote:

Yeah, I just saw that. DOH! Philly's post was great, too.

Oh my, keep that up and I will start blushing!

The thing is they do need feedback, if more then one person finds the same problem that is actually good bad feedback. It's when only one person finds a problem that makes it hard to track down.

I'm going to try it at least a few more times to try and see it I can find other problems.

I really do believe though that this could become a very handy if not usefull desktop manager tool.

Beta~! Smeta~? Just for the info here this is a forum area for feed back and just whatever you want to say to work with the project as Jeff has set things up very well!
I have fences setup on my gateway laptop and it works fine. My only problem for real I've found so far is not to drag and drop from anywhere as it will actually move the folder or such to the desktop and fences from where it was completely. Thus I just make short cuts and place them and rename them as I usually would. I'm sure this and other problems will be worked out as the testing goes onward. Here is a little screenie of what I have thus far...

One more suggestion:

I had 4 files grouped into one fence. I selected those 4 files, right-clicked and selected Send to New Compressed Zipped Folder. When the zipped folder appeared, it was on the plain old desktop, outside the fence!

It would have been nice if, since the original 4 files were all in one fence, if the zipped folder also went to that fence.

Did you try holding down the CTRL key while you right-click?

This is what i have been looking for for a LONG time. I have tried all the things like objectbar, and more, but i just keep ending up with desktop icons and a quick launch bar. With this i can still clean up my desktop with 1 dbl-click and then restore it all back when i need it. I love the scrolling areas, its all great.

Only thing i found was moving from my laptop, to work docking station, to home docking station, the screen rez is a lot diff on each, and things got kind of messy, but talking to Jeff i found that under tools/more tools there is an option to save settings PER resolution, so once i checked that, its all great!!

Working GREAT!!

I have a suggestion.. was just thinking about this one..

How about a "fence" we can draw and point it to an RSS feed (or several) that would scroll to show the feed and an update interval. It could be used for Twitter, or any other RSS feed. But it would vanish with the other fences when you dbl-click.

Just an idea.

Ok one more from the peanut gallery...

How about a fence that can read my recent document list that shows up in the start menu?
So it would show links to the last files i opened, etc. OR allow me to pick a menu item to show, control panel, printers, etc? This could be really cool.

On the previous RSS idea.. how about allow DX creators to make a widget/gadget that would run in that fence, and when that fence is closed it would hide too. Just an idea. Seems i full if them today.. maybe im just nervous about going under the knife tomorrow.. LOL

One more observation: It seems as though Fences will not work on Vista Ultimate 64. (
